Northview University Classes Fall 2010

WELCOME to Northview University! Our desire is to foster a community of lifelong learners.

Courses this semester are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evenings beginning Aug. 19 and last five weeks, ending on Sept. 16 .

Childcare will be provided for children ages newborn through 2 years for any adult registering for a Northview University class. Children ages 3 years through 5th grade can enroll in Northview University—Kids for an additional fee.

Students in grades 6-12 are welcome to register for any Northview University class.

COURSES

Bible Study Lab

description: Does it ever seem like you just don’t “get it” when it comes to reading and studying the Bible? Join us to take a hands-on approach to learn that “how” to study the Bible is easier than you thought.

facilitator: BJ Carver has a B.A. in Pastoral Ministry and Biblical Studies. He and his wife Sarah have been married for 14 years and have three girls and three boys. BJ has a passion for teaching God’s word and showing people how they can better know the Scriptures for themselves.

cost: $18 (includes cost of the book)

Good Sense Budgeting

description: Learn to control your finances so your finances don’t end up controlling you! In this course, you’ll get training in Biblical financial principles, as well as guidance to prioritize financial goals, develop a personalized spending plan, identify action steps to minimize expenses and reduce debt.

facilitator: Scott Meyers is director of Northview’s Personal Finance Minstry and is a successful entrepreneur and business owner. He and his wife Christiana live in Fishers with their three children.

cost: $15 (includes the cost of the book)

 

Knowing God

description: God delights in us knowing and understanding Him. In this class, we will journey together into the mystery of God and learn how we can know Him personally in our daily walk with Him. This course will emphasize theology and applied faith.

facilitator: Pastor Dan Westlund served for 38 years as a licensed and ordained minister with the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He has a Master’s degree in Theology and Ministry. Dan has been married for 38 years and has three married sons and seven grandchildren. For the past 10 years, Dan has ministered as the Founder and President of Solution For Life.

Free* Study (A Study of Galatians)

description: This class is a “prequel” to our spiritual growth campaign, Free*, this fall. Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Discover why the Apostle Paul would say this and why this is so important today. This class will help you dig deeper into Galatians, as well as prepare you for Free*.

facilitator: Steve Boles is the Executive Director of Mark 2 Ministries, an international outreach focused on equipping churches to minister among individuals with disabilities. He and his wife Deb have attended Northview since 1985 and have two children.

Leadership—The Biblical Foundation

description: In this course, developed by leadership expert John C. Maxwell, topics will be explored that help to provide the foundational principles of biblical leadership, including (but not limited to) casting vision, developing strong character and cultivating people skills.

facilitator: Scott McDonald is an Associate Trainer for EQUIP, a Dr. John C. Maxwell organization that is focused on educating and training leaders worldwide. He is the Managing Director of Global Relocation for Oakwood Worldwide and resides in Carmel with his wife, Leisa, and two daughters.

S.H.A.P.E.

description: (Four-week class beginning Aug. 26) God has gifted every Christian with a unique S.H.A.P.E.—Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality and Experiences. In this class, you will discover and understand these gifts and passions, identify your spiritual S.H.A.P.E. and help you find opportunities at Northview to use these gifts.

facilitator: Jeff Scott is a successful business owner with the heart of a pastor. He is licensed into Christian ministry through Northview. Jeff and his wife Sue were used by God many years ago to begin the Discipleship Walk and to help bring the Alpha Course to Northview.

Sex Ed for Dummies (We Parents) - only I registration per couple needed

description: It’s not rocket science, but it is an area of parenting that can feel overwhelming for Christian parents. If you have children (elementary through high school), come to this class to gain practical advice about teaching abstinence-based sex education. Topics covered will include when to have “The Talk,” how to start comfortable conversations in uncomfortable topics, what a healthy relationship is and how God fits into these discussions.

facilitator: Creating Positive Relationships is a local non-profit sex education program, serving your kids for over 20 years.

cost: $25/couple (includes the cost of the book)

 

Poverty 201

description: So you took Poverty 101 this past spring. Now what? This course is designed to take you one step deeper into understanding poverty, with an emphasis on action steps. Join in the conversation with other like-minded “local missionaries” and brainstorm a personal game plan to serve our Urban Neighbors. (Note: Poverty 101 is a prerequisite for this class.)

facilitator: Aaron Shelby has been on staff as the Urban Pastor here at Northview for four years. He’s also been Lead Pastor at Brookside Community Church for three years. Previous experience includes working in the public school system in secondary education, developing programs and accessing opportunities for his students. Other experts in urban community development will serve as instructors for this class, as well.
